The Highland regiments have always considered themselves special and been set apart. As this book reveals, the roots of that elitist attitude lie in the neglected field of military social history. Diana Henderson's extensive research has revealed a new side to the Highland regiments and this book examines in detail the life of the Highland soldier between 1820 and 1920 and the pride and reputation that has made him so famous and respected through the years. While changes in the origins of the Highland soldiers have taken place, national loyalty, their unique uniform and music and the strong family nature of their regiments have all contributed to the particular character of the Highland battalions. The book examines the character of the highland regiments through the medium of the officers and men, and the result gives new meaning to Highland regimental history. Diana Henderson studied law at Strathclyde and has a PhD degree in history from Edinburgh University. She is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Advanced Studies in the University of Edinburgh and Honorary Research Director of the Scots at War Trust. She has lectured widely on military, legal and fundraising subjects and held the Douglas Haig Fellowship in 1998. One of the advantages of new technology is that it enables hard-to-find books to be made available again. We are pleased to present the first fruits of exploring John Donald's classic backlist of academic titles. Not only do we hope to add more titles to the list but look forward to bringing in other titles suitable for this system as time goes on
